    MADE by DWC’s Splash into Summer Recap

    An evening of shopping, art, and food also serves to showcase the beauty of the Downtown Women’s Center community.

    On Thursday, July 30th, MADE by DWC held its 3rd annual summer soiree event. Throughout the evening, guests were able to shop and mingle while snacking on juice and wraps from Pressed Juicery and Simply Salad.

  • Working to Reclaim Her Life

    “I want to go back to work. I want to go back to my previous life.”

    These are words Alisa S. repeats throughout sharing her story. This mantra has kept her going through the past two years when she first arrived to downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row area.

    Originally from Armenia, Alisa has lived in California for the past 17 years. A few years ago, she went through family problems that left her with few options. She slept in a park for 10 days until she was advised to go to downtown Los Angeles and seek shelter and services.

    Five years ago, Wendy Scholl considered herself a volunteer “under the radar.”

    As an attorney for Bank of America, she had been to DWC to participate in group volunteer projects organized by her work, but had never volunteered on her own. It was during a Christmas donation sorting project that Wendy learned about our Skills Enhancement Training (“SET” to Create) knitting workshop.

    The Downtown Women’s Center was abuzz with excitement when we welcomed international superstar Salma Hayek Pinault to our Center in late March – an unexpected but delightful surprise to DWC residents and staff.

    Arriving with her daughter and some of her friends, Salma stopped by to donate some of her very own dresses, blouses, and pants to the Center and meet the women of DWC.
