Volunteer FAQs

What opportunities are available for volunteering at the Downtown Women’s Center?

There are many great ways to get involved with DWC, including assisting in our Kitchen, Day Center, and Residence, supporting workshops for the women, or providing administrative support to the Center. Browse our opportunities here.

Is there an age limit for volunteers?

Yes. On-site volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Because DWC serves an adult client population, we do not have on-site volunteer opportunities appropriate for minors. This includes minors accompanied by adults. We do offer educational opportunities and ways for youth to get involved off site. Click here for opportunities for volunteers under the age of 18.

How do I get started as a volunteer?

Check out the available volunteer opportunities on the main Volunteer page. If you find one that interests you, please complete our Volunteer Application.

All opportunities require attendance at Volunteer Orientation. Some opportunities also require volunteers to attend Volunteer Training. You can find more information and the next available dates for Volunteer Orientation and Volunteer Training here.

I am interested in leading a workshop or course for participants (e.g., resumé workshop, health education, art class). How do I apply?

We are currently experiencing an embarrassment of riches when it comes to wonderful and dedicated workshop volunteers.  Might we suggest volunteering to facilitate one of our Product Development Workshops, or Other Opportunities.

Do you approve volunteer hours for service-learning or community service?

DWC accepts a limited number of students completing service-learning hours. Please note that all volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

For availability, please contact us, and provide the following information:

• Name of university or college campus
• Year in school and declared major
• Name of professor and course
• Number of hours requested and deadline for completion
• Any specific guidelines for service-learning hours

At this time, we do not offer opportunities for individuals seeking to complete court-appointed community service hours.

Can I bring donations when I come to volunteer?

Yes, please do! We welcome your high-quality, gently used items. In-kind donations provide vital resources for our participants and residents.

Find our list of most needed items here.

Where are you located?

DWC’s main location is at 442 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles 90013, on the corner of 5th Street and South San Pedro Street. This includes our Day Center, Women’s Medical and Mental Health Clinic, San Pedro Street Residence, and MADE by DWC Café and Gift Boutique.

Our Los Angeles Street Residence and the MADE by DWC Resale Boutique are located at 325 S. Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles 90013, between 3rd and 4th Streets.

Where should volunteers park?

On-site parking is not available to volunteers during weekday business hours. Limited parking is available to volunteers for weekend and evening opportunities on a first-come, first-served basis.

There is metered street parking along San Pedro Street, and one public parking lot located nearby.

  • Prestige Parking is on the east side of South San Pedro Street between 4th Street and Boyd.

What public transportation is available near the Center?

DWC encourages the use of public transportation! We are accessible by dozens of MTA bus routes, including the 18, 53, 55, 62, 355, and 720. We are also less than one mile from the 7th Street/Metro Center (where the blue line meets the red line). At that station you can take the Montebello 40 or the Metro Bus 16 to 4th and Los Angeles. Please visit to enter your starting address and DWC's address for updated schedules and bus routes.
